Pelikan "Griffix" is Hatch Studios' latest international spot produced for Pelikan, Germany. It features four stylized kids from various age groups each showcasing Pelikan's latest "Griffix" line of children's pens.

The gang performs an energetic dance routine in which they sing about their specific pens, ending in a climatic finale that wraps up the commercial nicely. The version presented here is the 4:3 PAL superless version. We also produced a widescreen SD alt. This sound is not the final so lip-sync might be slightly off.

Katzuo "Little Ninja"

Katzuo was an experiment in combining fundamental & simple character forms contrasted with highly detailed texture work. This fusion of opposite style aspects creates a unique image that instantly captures the gestural form of the character yet continues to attract the eye to different areas of the image in which new details are constantly making themselves visible.

This contrast follows through to subject matter as well featuring a relatively cute character yielding a fierce weapon against a morbid backdrop.

Once more, the contrast is also maintained within the color palette combining soft, pink and healthy skin tones against dark reds and weathered textures.

This is one of two spots produced by Hatch Studios Ltd. for Reach. Appropriately named "Conveyor", it features a character being able to brush her teeth by sliding her teeth within her mouth.

Some interesting notes about this project were that we created the characters in a very stylized caricature form yet rendered them in a method which makes them appear very 'tangible'. The oversized heads in proportion to the bodies further emphasize this as does the realistic lighting setup. In addition, ensuring that the teeth moving within the mouth didn't come off as looking creepy was a challenge in itself.

The spot features a Fusion making an epic journey across two continents and freezing its surrounding environment in doing so. This is synonymous with Ford?s tagline: ?Create a reaction.? When crosses the ocean we showcase beautiful frozen environments through which the car determinately travels until it reaches the other side. At this point, we are greeted with an unexpected surprise bringing the commercial to a dramatic finale.

Ford "Thrill Ride" is the latest spot created at Hatch Studios Ltd, directed by Richard Rosenman and Larissa Ulisko.

Inspired by Japanese illustration, this spot relies heavily on seamless integration of cutting edge 3D computer graphics combined with bold 2D character designs, both existing in a lavish and rich multi-media environment.

Not only did we wish to create a visually compelling spot, but we also insisted in developing a sub-story involving aggressive & chaotic characters attempting to catch the Ford Fusion. This provided a set-up for a wild car chase in which the Fusion inevitably out-maneuvers the characters in a climatic and explosive finale.

Props to our agency and client friends who made this such a fun project to work on.

Heart & Stroke Lottery: "Launch"

This recently-completed spot called "Launch" was produced by Hatch Studios Ltd. for the early 2008 Heart & Stroke Lottery. The :30 commercial features a pinball machine in which we follow the ball as it guides us through the various prizes you can win and educates the viewer about what the H&S Foundation is responsible for.

There were more than 20 different versions created for this spot, mainly to comply with the constantly changing deadline dates. In order to make this efficient for production, various scenes were developed in a manner that would allow both the insertion of such an element, and would work just as well without.

The commercial was rendered using pre-calculated irradiance maps for flicker-free global illumination output in combination with single-frame GI elements requiring motion, all of which were later composited together and color-corrected in post.

The spot was modeled, textured and animated with 3dsmax 8.0, rendered with VRay 1.5 RC3 and composited with After Effects. Photoshop was used for all the graphics and it was onlined on a Flame.

All four spots were created from scratch in just under one and a half month's time which was quite a laboreous task due to the various highly detailed environments. The character textures were created from real orange peel scans enhanced with displacement mapping and subtle glossy reflections. Stretchy arms, legs and bodies were incorporated into the IK in order to achieve exaggerated cartoon style squash and stretch animation.

The spot was modeled with Silo & 3dsmax, animated with 3dsmax, lit and rendered with VRay 1.5 RC3, and composited with After Effects. The depth of field was created with DOF PRO.
All four spots were created from scratch in just under one and a half month's time which was quite a laboreous task due to the various highly detailed environments. The character textures were created from real orange peel scans enhanced with displacement mapping and subtle glossy reflections.
Reactor Rigid Bodies

These are tests using 3dsmax's physics simulation plugin, Reactor. These simulations focus specifically on rigid bodies involving large quantities of elements, each with appropriate size, weight and friction properties. In addition, there are collision objects which are always color-coded in blue.

Although the nature of these tests is rather simple, creating a fully-functional and physically-correct environment can be quite challenging. All variables must work collectively together in order to produce a functional simulation and usually persistent tweaking is required before a usable solution is found. The results however, are definitely worth it since creating such intricate keyframed animation would require months of labor as opposed to thirty seconds of computational processing power.

Simulated with 3dsmax 8.0 Reactor, rendered with VRay 1.5 RC3 and composited with After Effects.

This is one of four tags recently created for Teletoon Canada at Hatch Studios Ltd.

Each tag features a character transforming from summer and winter sports equipment and performing various related actions. The premise was to encourage kids to be physically active and suggest some activities for doing so.

The tags were quite fun to develop as well as challenging in order to pack as much as possible in only seven seconds. Currently, the tags are on TV and web.

Autodesk - "Media & Entertainment"

This project was a Siggraph 2007 showcase demo produced for Autodesk Media & Entertainment (M&E) at Hatch Studios Ltd.

The premise was to create a sophisticated menu system symbolizing Autodesk's various M&E market and product lines. The demo features three main sections: Film, Design, and Games, each of which was intercut with client footage.

Each market section (and associated sphere) is represented through deviated color grading (Red, Blue, then Green). The main menu therefore contains a neutral grading with splashes of all three colors carefully dispersed throughout. The use of color graded treatments helps keep consistency from section to section and holds the piece together quite nicely.

The video shown here contains only the 3D work, without the client footage since permission would have been required from each contributor. In addition, the typography has also been removed. As a result, some props such as the video monitors may appear untextured when in fact they have the client footage playing within.

Charlie: Interplanetary Weapons Peddler

This is an in-house character created at Hatch Studios Ltd.

Charlie is Sammy's intergalactic partner in crime. Together, they recklessly cruise the universe causing an insurmountable amount of trouble and leaving a trail of broken hearts behind them. While Sammy evolved from a long line of once noble and oddly refined reptilian ancestors, Charlie was a runaway offshoot from a biological swine and pit bull DNA mixing experiment gone horribly wrong. As a result, Charlie lacks the minimal capacity of intellect required for self preservation, and had it not been for his favorite personal ACME laser blaster lifted from 'Convenience Z' in the Delta Quadrant, his species would have long since perished having put the universe in a better place. Charlie's quite the trigger-happy madcap he appears to be and some have incredulously compared him to a particular president from the late 21st century on planet earth*. While civilian sightings of Charlie are extremely rare, we managed to get our hands on this particular mug shot taken moments before he busted out of the joint with Sammy's help.

*Un-named president was later responsible for destruction of planet earth.

Charlie was modeled, sculpted and textured using ZBrush, and rendered with VRay 1.47.03. It was polished in Photoshop where the background was also created.
Anyway, here is one of the first projects we produced there some time ago for Bick's / Ogilvy & Mather. There's three spots in total in which an 'intercepted' TV signal is shown with an alien documentarian commenting on the cruel ways we treat pickles. Absurd and funny.

This was a job for Infosection, a German company, that required four different renders of a newly designed character to serve as their upcoming video game host. As you can see, it was decided early in the production that the character would have fur, which therefore required a fair amount of research and development regarding fur solutions for 3dsmax. In the end, Shag:Hair was used because it provided unlimited flexibility and control over every aspect of the fur. The character was lit using traditional lighting techniques in conjunction with global illumination.
Barritas "Olympics" consisted of a twenty-second spot for the Marinela company in Mexico. The spot was heavily focused on character work and required three fully modeled, rigged and textured characters - a pineapple, a strawberry, and a pastry bun. About one week was assigned to modeling since the characters had been pre-built for previous commercials, three weeks for animation, two weeks for lighting and rendering, and the remaining week for compositing. This job turned out to be quite fun to work on since we were able to push the character performances as far as we wanted to which resulted in some very funny animation.

Sammy 'Intergalactic Troublemaker'

WHO IS SAMMY?

Sammy travels the galaxy with the sole purpose of "disturbing the peace". He is known by many as "The Troublemaker", or more simply put, "The Troubler". Sammy peddles faulty weaponry and defective warp engines for income, often reselling such scrap for more than ten times their worth. Although Sammy may appear to be quite reptilian in nature, he is actually quite a ladies man and has a bad habit of getting caught red handed by his multiple girlfriends across the galaxy. Currently, there are several hundred arrest warrants for him due to fraud.

Sammy was created over the span of about a week, on and off. He was produced solely for personal satisfaction, from an idea I had some time ago. Although he is a fairly simple character in terms of design, the lighting, texturing and rendering were quite complex. His skin was rendered with micro-triangle displacement technology, in conjunction with conventional bump mapping and although this is not quite evident here, it is very impressive in the 4000x4000 resolution composite. The fine displacement used on the skin produces ultra-detailed realism which effectively eliminates any stretch on the texture maps. Sammy was rendered in layers for maximum compositing control, as all my projects are. There were 7 layers in total: 2 gradient backgrounds, a DOF detailed background, a character layer, a global illumination layer (GI Pass / Ambient Occlusion Pass), a diffused soft glow, and a harder edge glow. Sammy was posted before but new links needed to be updated.

Please click here to be taken to the Sammy project page.

Sammy was modeled and textured with 3dsmax 6.0, rendered with VRay 1.09 using traditional lighting techniques with global illumination, and composited (as well as color corrected and processed) with Photoshop.

Carlito

Who is Carlito?

Carlito is one of the few remaining and extremely rare South American Horned Slugs. Although quite curious and passive in nature, South American Horned Slugs are astonishingly stupid and have therefore dwindled down in population faster than panties being hurled at a Tom Jones concert. It is presently estimated, or perhaps optimistically misjudged, that only a mere hundred thousand exist in the deepest, dampest and drabbest of Chilean jungles. Being descendents of the Giant South African Slug species (and still a mind-boggling mystery how they crossed the continents), they tend to secrete a thick, slimy and glistening green mucus. Once termed "The species most likely to win first place in the Darwin Awards" by none other than Darwin himself late one night during a Poker game gone sour, their mucus tends to be particularly sweet scented therefore posing a precarious threat to their impending extinction. You see, South American Horned Slugs tend to have a staggeringly short memory span and will quite often (99.8% incidence rate) supplement their diet by ingesting their very own, already forgotten, mucus trails. This, in turn, leads to a never-ending feeding frenzy in which they spend the rest of their unquestionably meaningless days going around in circles and consuming their slimy discharge until either catastrophic intestinal eruption occurs, terminal exhaustion sets in, or they are fatefully preyed upon by the ever-ferocious and often-elusive South American Horned Beetle (who coincidentally evolved with the unfathomable gift of specifically identifying that very same mucus scent from over 3 kilometers away).

Please click here to be taken to the Carlito project page.

The model was created within ZBrush using ZSpheres where it was modeled, sculpted, textured and displaced. Thereafter, it was imported into 3dsmax for lighting and rendering using VRay 1.45.70. The rendering was split up into numerous layers such as diffuse, specular, shadow, ambient occlusion, diffuse glows, etc, for optimum control during the compositing stage.

The foliage was created entirely from numerous color corrected composite photographs and the depth of field was produced with my own Depth Of Field Generator PRO plugin:

Boris 'Alien Invader'

Boris was created over the span of about a month, on and off. He was produced solely for personal satisfaction from an idea I had some time ago. Although he's technically supposed to be a merciless alien invader, he is far too compassionate for planetary conquest and instead "comes in peace", quite often escaping near-death capture by the worlds he visits.

Yep, just thought I'd give you some details of his background.

Now the technical stuff: He was modeled with a mix of box modeling and mesh sculpting in 3dsmax. His skin was rendered with micro-triangle displacement technology, in conjunction with conventional bump mapping which looks very impressive in the 4000x4000 resolution composite. Boris was rendered in numerous layers for maximum compositing control, as all my projects are. There were 35 layers in total, particularly because there was heavy Photoshop work done to this one. Perhaps if there is enough interest in the near future I will show the layering breakdown.

Ronald is an old and miserable sixth generation butler who is profoundly unhappy with his chosen profession. Despite this, Ronald keeps at it every day in an effort to carry on the prestigious butler family tradition, and especially to honour his father "Ronald Bottler Senior The Fifth", who had the noble privilege of serving the great "Master Reginald H. McDonald", also known as the inventor of the superbly popular and ever best-selling unicycle training wheels. During his off hours, Ronald enjoys sitting prostrate by the fireplace in his finest suit reading through his dated encyclopedia of rare South American Horned Slug species. In 2003, Ronald won second prize in the world-wide annual "Sir Pronunciation Championship" tournament for his 89.7% win over world-renowned Russian Butler "Boris Mikhailov" who came in at whopping 92.4% but was later expelled due to testing positive in speech enhancement drug tests. On a completely different note and due to numerous years of persistent frowning, Ronald's upper lip has dwindled into an almost non-existant flap of pale-colored skin, only vaguely noticeable during the occasional toothy and malicious snarl.

Robin Hood “Memories” and "Teaches Us" are two 30 second, fully computer animated spots created by Redrover Animation Studios Ltd. for Smuckers Canada, represented by Ogilvy & Mather Canada. The spots reveal two children named Andrew and Elizabeth who are being interviewed in a documentary style show about why they enjoy baking with their mom. The table shows various used baking utensils to suggest they have just finished baking muffins and the product, a rolled up bag of Robin Hood flour, rests nearby. The sunny afternoon setting fills the kitchen with a warm inviting sunlight and creates a visually engaging commercial that arouses immediate interest in the viewer. Currently, Andrew and Elizabeth are on the front page of the Robin Hood website (http://www.robinhood.ca).

Robin Hood 'Giving'

Robin Hood "Giving" is the third and final spot for 2005 created by Redrover Animation Studios Ltd. for Smuckers Canada, represented by Ogilvy & Mather Canada. The spot once again reveals Andrew and Elizabeth being interviewed, this time at the dining room table in the evening. As this is a spot intended for the holiday season, they are shown wrapping their gingerbread cookies in gift boxes for "all of their favourite people in the whole world." The table shows various gift-wrapping accessories, the freshly baked cookies (complete with handwritten names), a glamorous holiday candle ornament, and a kitchen cloth with the Robin Hood logo. The cold winter setting outside contrasts the warm dining room lighting inside and helps develop a cozy holiday atmosphere. Currently, Andrew and Elizabeth are on the front page of the Robin Hood website.
